He was educated, locally in Asebe Taferi Elementary School, Addis Ababa Technical School, Addis Ababa Teachers' Training College as well as University College of Addis Ababa. Then he went to England for further education. In England Asfaw joined the University of London as exchange student the School of Oriental and African Studies.
